Festive orange-and-black bagels with spooky pumpkin faces baked right in.
Ingredients

- 3 cups bread flour
- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1 tablespoon orange food coloring
- 2 tablespoons black cocoa powder (or black food coloring)
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 1/4 cups warm water
- Cornmeal (for dusting)
Instructions
- In a bowl, activate yeast with warm water and sugar; let bubble 5–10 minutes.
- Stir in flour and salt, then divide dough in half.
- Tint one half with orange food coloring and the other with black cocoa/food coloring.
- Shape orange dough into bagel rounds; cut out jack-o’-lantern face shapes and fill with black dough pieces.
- Let bagels rise 30 minutes, covered.
- Boil bagels for 1 minute per side, then place on a cornmeal-dusted baking sheet.
- Bake at 400°F for 20–22 minutes until firm and festive.
Notes
- Ensure the water is warm but not hot to avoid killing the yeast.
- Feel free to customize the jack-o’-lantern faces as desired.
- Store any leftover bagels in an airtight container.
