Description

Festive orange-and-black bagels with spooky pumpkin faces baked right in.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups bread flour
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon orange food coloring
  • 2 tablespoons black cocoa powder (or black food coloring)
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/4 cups warm water
  • Cornmeal (for dusting)

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, activate yeast with warm water and sugar; let bubble 5–10 minutes.
  2. Stir in flour and salt, then divide dough in half.
  3. Tint one half with orange food coloring and the other with black cocoa/food coloring.
  4. Shape orange dough into bagel rounds; cut out jack-o’-lantern face shapes and fill with black dough pieces.
  5. Let bagels rise 30 minutes, covered.
  6. Boil bagels for 1 minute per side, then place on a cornmeal-dusted baking sheet.
  7. Bake at 400°F for 20–22 minutes until firm and festive.

Notes

  • Ensure the water is warm but not hot to avoid killing the yeast.
  • Feel free to customize the jack-o’-lantern faces as desired.
  • Store any leftover bagels in an airtight container.
